General
What conditions does Dr. Ashwani Maichand treat?
Dr. Maichand treats a wide range of orthopaedic conditions including knee and hip arthritis, sports injuries, ligament and meniscus injuries, joint pain, fractures, AVN, frozen shoulder, ankylosing spondylitis, and spine-related disorders.
When should I consult an orthopaedic specialist?
You should consult an orthopaedic specialist if you experience persistent joint pain, swelling, stiffness, difficulty in movement, sports-related injuries, or pain that does not improve with rest or medication for more than 2–3 weeks.
Are all orthopaedic conditions treated with surgery?
No. Many orthopaedic conditions can be managed with non-surgical treatments such as medication, physiotherapy, lifestyle modification, weight management, and image-guided injections. Surgery is recommended only when conservative treatments fail to provide adequate relief or when the structural damage is severe.
Does Dr. Maichand offer second-opinion consultations?
Yes. Dr. Maichand regularly provides second opinions, especially for patients who have been advised joint replacement elsewhere. In many cases, less-invasive options or non-surgical management may be possible.
Joint Replacement
What is robotic-assisted knee or hip replacement surgery?
Robotic-assisted joint replacement uses advanced computer guidance to help the surgeon plan and perform surgery with greater precision. This can improve implant alignment, preserve healthy tissue, reduce blood loss, and support a smoother, faster recovery in suitable patients.
How long does a knee or hip implant last?
Modern implants are designed to last 20–25 years or more in the majority of patients. Longevity depends on factors such as patient weight, activity level, implant type, and surgical technique.
Am I too young / too old for joint replacement?
There is no fixed age cut-off. The decision is based on the severity of the joint damage, level of pain, and how the condition is affecting your daily life. Dr. Maichand has performed successful joint replacements in patients ranging from their early 20s to their 90s.
Will I be able to walk normally after joint replacement?
The vast majority of patients regain near-normal walking and the ability to climb stairs, drive, travel, and resume most low-impact activities. Most patients are walking with support within 24–48 hours of surgery.
What is MIS (Minimally Invasive Surgery)?
MIS uses smaller incisions and tissue-sparing techniques compared to traditional open surgery. Benefits include less blood loss, less post-operative pain, faster recovery, and a smaller scar.
Surgery & Recovery
How long does recovery take after joint replacement surgery?
Most patients are walking with support within a day or two and discharged from hospital in 2–4 days. Initial recovery takes 4–6 weeks; full recovery and return to all daily activities typically takes 3–6 months depending on the procedure and rehabilitation.
How long will I stay in the hospital?
For routine knee or hip replacement, the typical hospital stay is 2–4 days. For arthroscopic procedures, most patients go home the same day or next day.
Is physiotherapy required after surgery?
Yes. Physiotherapy is essential for restoring strength, range of motion, and balance. We offer a structured rehabilitation programme starting from day one of surgery, with both in-hospital and follow-up sessions.
When can I return to work after surgery?
For desk-based work, most patients return in 4–6 weeks. For physically demanding jobs, return-to-work may take 8–12 weeks. Dr. Maichand will advise based on your specific procedure and occupation.
When can I drive again after knee or hip replacement?
Most patients can resume driving 4–6 weeks after right-side knee or hip replacement, and slightly earlier for left-side surgery (in automatic vehicles). Driving should resume only after you can safely brake and turn without pain.
What are the risks of joint replacement surgery?
Like any surgery, joint replacement carries small risks including infection, blood clots, implant loosening, and nerve injury. With modern techniques and meticulous protocols, the overall complication rate is very low (under 1–2% in most series).
